On 15th February 2022, CHAD and the Faculty of Public Health hosted the fourth in a series of webinars relating to COVID-19, health impacts and inequalities: COVID-19 and deprivation: differences in exposure, outcomes and experiences.
We were joined by over 100 delegates who heard our two speakers present their research and ideas on this topical issue. Professor Siddhartha Bandyopadhyay from the University of Birmingham shared findings from analyses that identified deprivation and ethnicity as independent predictors of COVID-19 mortality, a risk likely to be compounded lower willingness to take up COVID-19 vaccinations in adults from BAME groups. Dr Richard Machin, Nottingham Trent University, then shared his analysis of COVID-19, social security and inequality. Richard highlighted how COVID-19 arrived after extended under-investment in an already failing social security system, and how some emergency changes helped, but did not go far enough to support those most in need of benefit. He closed with some tangible suggestions to improve the system.
